Telehealth In 2016 – Opportunities and Challenges

Presented by the Healthcare Law Section

Patients are demanding greater access to timely healthcare, and telemedicine – the use of electronic communications to render medical care – is growing to meet this demand. According to the Medical Board of California, telemedicine, also known as telehealth, is a tool in a medical practitioner’s belt, not a separate medical specialty. Yet the legal challenges surrounding telehealth are unique and must be addressed. This program will examine cutting edge telehealth business models and the attendant hot button legal issues, including:

• Licensing, credentialing and peer review;
• Contracting;
• Standards of care;
• Reimbursement and Fraud & Abuse;
• Privacy and security;
• Corporate practice of medicine;
• The California Telehealth Advancement Act of 2011; and
• CMS/Medicare requirements
