Evaluating Claims of Environmental Threat

Evaluating Claims of Environmental Threat: The Case Study of Beverly Hills High School
Program Title:
Evaluating Claims of Environmental Threat: The Case Study of Beverly Hills High School

Program Date:
Thursday, April 5, 2018

Program Description:
In November 2002 Erin Brockovich collected air samples on the campus of Beverly Hills High School that she later described as containing toxic emissions “higher than the 405 Freeway at rush hour.”  In January 2007, the LA Superior Court dismissed all claims that Brockovich and Ed Masry brought against the High School.

This long-running threat turned out to be a false alarm.  When push came to shove, the High School did not roll over to litigation, and the claims of heightened toxic emissions were baseless.

Community members throughout Los Angeles are increasingly and rightfully concerned about environmental harm to themselves and their children.  Activism is on the rise.  How do communities separate the wheat from the chaff in environmental alarms?  Our panel will address this challenging topic and help to move the conversation forward.
