9th LACBA-LACMA Healthcare Law & Medicine Educational Symposium

Presented by the Healthcare Law Section

This joint educational program of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Healthcare Law Section and the Los Angeles County Medical Association will address emerging issues for providers and healthcare lawyers.
Part I, The Impact of MACRA on Healthcare Transactions, presents an overview and strategies to address the Medicare payment models moving from volume to value that have impacted payment schedules for providers. Experts in healthcare transactions, Paul Gomez of Pollsinelli and Rick Rifenbark of Foley Gardner, discuss these changes and strategies to maintain funding for services rendered by providers.
Part II, Medical Necessity—Whose Call?, provides an overview of recent developments in the challenges to denials of medical coverage based on a lack of medical necessity. Through extensive litigation, renowned insurance law expert William M. Shernoff established California case law on medical necessity. Mr. Serhnoff will discuss medical necessity litigation and recent developments, as well as strategies to perfect medical necessity authorization at the insurance company level.
Part III, Can Law Help Save Medicine? addresses the rapid changes to the practice of medicine and the models of payment that fundamentally impact medicine as a profession. Maxwell J. Mehlman, Distinguished University and Professor of Law and Medicine at the Case Western Reserve University Schools of Law and Medicine, will discuss his recent law review article, Can the Law Save Medicine? Professor Mehlman will provide an overview of the early practice of medicine in America, which was largely self- serving, and the one hundred year struggle of American medical practitioners to establish medicine as a profession. Professor Melman also will describe the pressures facing the American physician that also threaten the professional status of medicine, and he will recommend solutions to preserve the profession of medicine and to maintain the confidence of patients in their physicians.
